A limited visa is a special type of visa for those who may not otherwise qualify for a visit visa. These are granted for a special purpose.
Applicants must:
- be a first-time traveler to New Zealand and/or
- be able to provide an acceptable New Zealand citizen or resident sponsor who is an immediate family member (parent/child/sibling)
Applicants must also be able to show the express purpose of their visit and may include any one of the following:
- to study a short course as a full-fee paying student
- be traveling to attend a significant event such as a birthday, funeral, wedding, a milestone anniversary, reunion event, or sports tournament
- attending a conference or seminar
- going for a medical treatment
- attending a family medical emergency, or traveling to provide short-term family support for an immediate family member,
- visiting a boyfriend or girlfriend for a short period of time if he/she is an eligible sponsor. The couple must meet the minimum requirement of partnership and have spent time together at least once in person
- to work for a Recognised Seasonal Employer.
Eligibility and Purpose
Limited visas can be granted for people who:
- may not be eligible for another type of visa because of a risk that they might remain in New Zealand after their visa expires, or
- choose the limited visa as their preferred method of entry into New Zealand.

The only kind of visa the holder of a limited visa can apply for while in New Zealand is another limited visa – which will only be granted if more time is needed to carry out the specified express purpose.
